2018 Wellington CC Road Championship

26 May 2018 by Paul Dashwood

A beautiful late autumn afternoon saw a group of intrepid Wellington cyclists turn up at Munro to compete for the club Road Race Championship. Although ineligible to win the coveted title, several Bairnsdale riders made a welcome addition to the numbers. Their presence enabled two grades to race, with the B grade field setting off first to ride the 45km out and course to Fernbank. By the time the A grade field started, a slight but telling breeze had picked up that provided some assistance on the return leg. Both fields had two man breakaways competing for line honours. B graders Allan Rankin (Wellington) and David Willowhite (Bairnsdale) managed to stay ahead of the chasing A graders, with Allan crossing the line with a comfortable margin ahead of David. The A grade Wellington duo of Craig Keane and Aaron Wain fought a keenly contested battle for line honours and the Championship with Craig just crossing the line ahead of last year’s champion Aaron. Phil Lutz of Bairnsdale took out third place in the A grade race, and Alec Mates took third for Wellington in B grade. Thanks to all the participants who raced, especially those who traveled from Bairnsdale, and also to Grant Smith for helping to run the race. Congratulations to our new club Road Race Champion, Craig Keane.
