Report on the latest race achievements by Wellington club members, courtesy of Mike Renehan. Congratulations to those who represented the club in these regional events, and good luck to those who are participating in the Gippsland 3 Day Tour this weekend.

Mike’s report;

Wellington cyclist Craig Keane is the Victorian Country road champion for Masters 4 riders. Keane travelled to Harcourt near Castlemaine last Saturday to compete in this event open to riders from Victorian country clubs. Over a hilly circuit of 56km, Keane managed to break clear of the rest of the field to win comfortably by over 2 minutes. On Sunday three Wellington riders travelled to Boolarra for the Gippsland road championships. The course using Limonite and Grand Ridge roads was undulating, with that steady climb to the highest point and then a big downhill. Aaron Wain raced in the Elite category finishing a creditable 6th against some state and national contenders. Craig Keane rode in the 40+ category and could not beat the tactical numbers of riders from other clubs. With a rider clear Keane chased while others sat behind and then sprinted past at the finish to take the minor placings. Keane finished in fourth place. Mike Renehan contested the 50+ category, which started out at a reasonable pace and as the distance went so did the speed. Riders started to drop off but Renehan hung on doggedley until the last time onto the Grand Ridge road where the winner and second slipped away and Renehan manged to stay clear for third.

This long weekend will see the annual Gippsland 3 Day Tour conducted. Saturday is at Lindenow Sth with 90km for A & B grades. Sunday is at Darnum having a time trial in the morning and a road race in the afternoon. Monday morning they will be racing at Leongatha around the Mardan circuit. Aaron Wain, Craig Keane and Alex Mates are all representing Wellington.
