New Season Starts 20th January

1 Jan 2019 by Paul Dashwood

The new racing season kicks off with a joint Bairnsdale/ Wellington Kermesse series. The first race will be at Lindenow on the 20th January at 10am. Full details will be in the Events Notifications and the Calendar which has been updated (via the Calendar tab above). Remember that there is no racing without a licence. Licences can be obtained on line via the Cycling Australia Membership page (http://membership.cycling.org.au/)- select Wellington Cycling Club.
Last season was another quiet one, with reduced membership numbers and reduced racing participation. It has only been through closer co-operation with Bairnsdale that we have been able to get sufficient numbers to make races worth running. It would be fantastic to see greater numbers at the races, to give the regulars more competition and make the racing more enjoyable all round. We have had some outstanding performances by those that have raced, both at the club level and some more prestigious races. One standout was Aaron Wain, winning the Mike Renehan Perpetual Trophy, Club Time Trial Championship, Club Hill Climb Championship and backing that up with excellent stage results leading to a 4th place overall in the Tour of Bright. Club stalwart Mike Renehan took out the Club Criterium Championship, and backed that up by winning the Criterium Championship and getting a 3rd place in the Road Race at the Australian Masters. Aaron also represented the Club at the Masters, along with John Verey. Former Club member Craig Keane briefly returned from his tour with the RAAF in the States and rejoined the club for long enough to take out the Club Road Championship. Alec Mates went to WA to compete in the Emergency Services Games and came away with a very creditable 5th place. Last but not least, Allan Rankin has been cranking out the kilometres doing his bit for the fight against cancer and taking part in the Tour de Cure. The Tour is not just a ride that covers a great deal of distance, but an amazing fundraising effort and publicity drive that Allan commits himself to whole-heartedly. So if any of these riders are present at an event- or any of our other racing members or our compatriots from Bairnsdale- you will be guaranteed an exciting race, so come along and support your local club. You will enjoy supported racing on safe and attractive roads and have the opportunity to socialise with like-minded cyclists.
